Manupirua Hot Pool & Mokoia Magic

2 iconic lakes. 2 geothermal hot pools. THE most scenic and hard to navigate channel in Rotorua, rare bird life plus a unique lens into untouched Maori cultural history.

This is a unique 4-hour experience to the most secluded, exclusive parts of Lake Rotorua & Lake Rotoiti that most of the locals don’t yet know about…

You’ll set out from the Rotorua Lakefront in our comfortable and stable all-weather water taxi. On fine days, the panoramic windows can be opened to let the fresh air in. If it’s raining, you can still enjoy views across the lake whilst staying dry and warm with the windows shut.

After a quick journey across the water, you’ll see Hinemoa’s Pool from Lake Rotorua. As the steam rises through the trees, you’ll get a sense of the unique Geothermal waters that delighted generations of the local Maori who lived on the island for over 300 years, until the 60’s.

From Hinemoa’s Pool, it’s a quick trip across to the entrance of the Ohau Channel. The entrance to the channel is just a fraction wider than our boat and it marks the start of one of the most challenging, but beautiful, navigable waterways in the region. The shallow water, shifting sandbanks and meandering river bends play host to countless navigational challenges, as well as being home to a menagerie of wildlife. The challenging nature of this waterway keeps it relatively untouched, while the overhanging trees and backdrop of rolling green hills are reminiscent of a scene from the wind in the willows.

After the twists and turns of the Ohau channel, the expansive view of Lake Rotoiti is a spectacle to behold. Tracking past some enviable lakefront properties, it’s straight on towards the Manupirua Hot Pools.
Nestled amongst the native bush and only accessible by boat, you’ll get to enjoy a swim in any of the 6 lakefront Geothermal pools, fed by a hot spring that has relaxed and soothed deserving muscles for over 165 years. The hot pools are uniquely kiwi and their isolation from roads and the world outside keep them a local gem.

For a quick cool down, take a dip in New Zealand’s biggest plunge pool; Lake Rotoiti. A dip in the bracing, clear water is something not to be missed. Or, if a bite to eat, cold drink or a cheeky wine or beer are more to your taste, the Hot Pool’s Cafe has you covered. You can even bring your own picnic!

Heading back across Lake Rotoiti and back through the Ohau Channel, your next stop is mystical Mokoia Island. The peak of a lava dome, Mokoia Island was home to local Maori for over 300 years, before the convenience of town-living overcame the desire for island life.

Mokoia is the jewel in Rotorua’s crown and is home to 25 pairs of breeding kiwi as well as the tīeke, or North Island Saddleback, which has been extinct on the mainland since the 1890’s. On Mokoia, they flit through the trees, taking stock of their visitors.

You’ll be guided through the island’s unique wildlife and history by a descendent of Mokoia Island and member of the local Iwi (tribe). After learning the stories of the Island and it’s sometimes turbulent history, you’ll head back to lakefront Rotorua, glowing after a journey that few people, even the locals, have ever taken before.
